I was a late comer to the green smoothie world, and by late, I mean YEARS!!! I’ve been seeing recipes for them here and there and I’ll have to say, I was more than a little skeptical. Once I finally took the plunge, I was hooked.
Today I’m talking about what finally convinced me to take the plunge, and what gave me resolve to keep green smoothies in the rotation on a permanent basis:
1: Energy – The number one reason I first tried green smoothies, is because everyone talked about this ‘great energy level’ that they were experiencing! Since my energy levels were in the dumps, that sounded highly appealing.
After two years of regularly drinking green smoothies, I can say without a doubt they are directly responsible for my improved energy levels! There have been times in the last two years that I haven’t had green smoothies for weeks at a time (vacations or sheer laziness), and I’ve really noticed a difference! I’ve proved again and again that I feel a whole lot better when I drink my green smoothies.
2: Loaded with nutrients – Do we ever get enough fruits and vegetables in a day? Well… I’m trying, and it’s a lot easier with a green smoothie thrown into the mix. My daily fruits and veggie intake goes up by 3-4 servings every time I have a smoothie. By varying what I put into my smoothies, I’m getting a great boost, super-charged with a variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants!
3: Lose weight – I’ve lost a fair bit of weight, or I should say fat to be accurate. My overall body fat percentage has went down since I started regularly drinking green smoothies. Areas that I’ve always had trouble with are melting away.
4: Gain weight – This might seem contradictory to number 3, but I promise they can work together! As I’ve lost body fat, I’ve noticed that I’ve been gaining more muscle and over time I’ve added a couple of extra pounds. In this case, I’m excited to be gaining weight because I’m finally gaining good weight in the form of muscle, and losing what I don’t need!
As a side note, my sister gave me permission to share her experience with green smoothies:
She didn’t have any weight to lose, but she’s always had trouble gaining muscle. When she started drinking green smoothies, not only did she gain a lot more energy, but she finally started gaining muscle weight the way she always wanted too!
5: Convenience – It might seem like it takes awhile to prepare a green smoothie every morning, but with a bit of preparation ahead of time, it only takes me 5 minutes a day. I don’t know of anything else that you can prepare so fast with so much nutrition!
I like to put pineapple in most of my green smoothies, so every week I cut up a pineapple and make sure my greens are washed and ready to go. That way, when I’m making my smoothie in the morning, it’s super fast.
I’ve found these smoothies to be my most convenient, healthy ‘meal-on-the-go’. Most days I have one for lunch with a snack of Curried Cashews mid-afternoon. I hope this has inspired you to easily add an extra few serving of fruits and veggies to your day!
