Cranberry Orange Smoothie Bowl

Three smoothie bowls on a marble background with a blue striped linen napkin.

I first made my Vitamin C Booster Cranberry Orange Smoothie 3 years ago, and I been making it nonstop ever since. But sometimes I’m more in the mood to eat something while at the same time craving fresh flavors. Whenever that mood strikes, I always opt for a smoothie bowl.

So I’ve altered one of my favorite smoothies of all time to make it a creamy base for all kinds of toppings. For these bowls, I added some sliced oranges, pomegranate arils over the top. Then I sprinkled on some Paleo Granola Dust and drizzled it all with yogurt.

In keeping with the cranberry orange theme, I made my batch of Granola Dust with dried cranberries in place of the dried figs called for in the recipe. I like to keep an eye out at my local health food store for fruit juice sweetened dried cranberries to keep this recipe refined sugar free.

Bananas and cranberries in the blender ready to be made into the smoothie bowl base.

I like use frozen bananas and frozen cranberries to keep the smoothie base thick and creamy.

All the smoothie ingredients blended and ready to be made into a smoothie bowl.

Once it’s blended completely smooth, you divide it into the serving bowls…

The smoothie base poured into 3 bowls with granola dust, yogurt and sliced oranges on top.

… and then it’s time to go crazy with the toppings!

The other thing I love about smoothie bowls is they’re so easy to make if you already have your granola or granola dust pre-made. It’s just a couple minutes in the blender and add however many toppings you have around. I also make this with just sliced oranges because I don’t always have pomegranates around, and it’s easy to customize to whatever you have on hand.

Description

The classic holiday flavor combination turned into a super tasty smoothie bowl that works as a light but indulgent feeling breakfast!

Ingredients

Scale

Smoothie Base:

1 cup frozen cranberries, 3 1/2 ounces

1 peeled and frozen banana, cut into chunks

2 oranges, 1 pound, peeled

1 Teaspoon vanilla

Pinch of cinnamon, (1/16th teaspoon)

Smoothie Bowl Toppings:

1/2 cup yogurt of your choice, depending on how creamy you like your smoothie bowls

1 orange or 3 mandarins, 12 ounces, peeled and cut bite sized

1/2 cup pomegranate arils

2 Tablespoons dried cranberries, fruit juice sweetened, optional

1/2 cup Paleo Granola Dust, see notes

Instructions

Make sure you have your toppings prepped before making the smoothie base. You want the smoothie base to be frosty and thick, and not melted.

When you have the toppings of your choice ready, make the smoothie base by adding the smoothie base ingredients into a high powered blender in the order listed

Secure the lid and blend starting on low speed and working up to speeds 6-7. Use the tamper to keep the mixture moving, and blend until smooth.

Pour the smoothie base into 2 serving bowls. Place the fruit over the top of the smoothie base, drizzle with yogurt, and finally sprinkle with Paleo Granola Dust.

Serve immediately.

Notes

For the Paleo Granola Dust in this recipe, I replaced the figs from my original recipe with apple juice sweetened dried cranberries for a cranberry orange flavor.
You may need to add a touch of sweetener to the smoothie base depending on how sweet your oranges are.

The nutritional fact are calculated with my Paleo Granola Dust and Greek yogurt.

  3. First of all, these look too pretty to eat (drink!)!!! Such a great way to use cranberries, which you don’t often think of using in smoothies. Frozen banana just makes everything work.

    • The only reason it came to mind is that I just can’t get enough of the cranberry/orange combo, so I’m always looking for ways to reinvent it!

    • It’s especially nice in the summertime to have frosty smoothie bowls, but I’ve found I like the thick and creamy bases even in the winter!
