This is the quickest and easiest facial treatment I’ve ever tried with the most dramatic results. Normally, a full spa style facial takes a good 45 minutes between the scrub, mask, steam, toner, and finally moisturizing.

For that reason, I can’t remember the last time that I did a full facial, maybe last fall sometime. But if you do have a bit of time, you can try out this post about How to do a DIY At-Homemade Facial for gorgeous glowing skin.

Between full scale facials I have been relying on this pineapple facial and my baking soda treatment for exfoliation a couple times a week. By combining these two treatments I have been able to keep my skin clean and exfoliated without soap for several years now. In between exfoliation treatments, I use this Facial Oil Cleansing Method for day to day cleansing.

Ever since I have started using this pineapple treatment a couple of times per week, my skin has become smoother, more even toned, and my pores have visibly shrunk. This treatment even makes discernible progress on fine lines.

I was worried at first this treatment might irritate my skin because pineapple juice is acidic but it’s actually anti-inflammatory. However each person is different, so I would recommend, as with all treatments, to do a spot test if you have troublesome skin. My skin is really sensitive to any store bought products, and I’ve never had a problem with this pineapple mask, but this is a highly individual thing.

So why does this work?

The answer is bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapple that is similar in characteristics to the papain enzyme found in papaya. These enzymes break down protein, this means that the mask exfoliates the dead skin from the surface of your face without the use of abrasive ingredients, leaving your face fresh and glowing. This treatment hinges on the live enzymes so the pineapple has to be fresh, canned pineapple won’t work.

Interesting Note: There are recent studies emerging about the potential anti-inflammatory effects of pineapple and I have found this to be the case with my skin. It has proved to be a gentle all around treatment from cleansing to exfoliation.

What to do:

Take a small piece of pineapple, 1″ by 1″, and rub all over your face, taking care around the eye area. Wait 5-10 minutes until the mask dries. Next, jump in the shower to rinse, and for a quick mini face steam. When you get out of the shower, follow with your choice of moisturizer.

All in all this treatment requires no more than one minute to put on your face, making it the perfect easy solution to more time consuming treatments.

I hope you’ll enjoy this extra easy facial treatment as much as I do, and be sure and let me know in the comments what your favorite facial is!

    • Freezing pineapple does destroy some of the enzymes, but it does still work pretty well and it’s the perfect solution for when you don’t have fresh pineapple in the refrigerator. I hope this helps and be sure, and let me know if you have anymore questions!

    • Thank you, but I wouldn’t advise adding pineapple to your soap because it’s a fresh ingredient that will spoil quickly. I hope this helps and be sure to let me know if you have anymore questions!

    • I’m not sure what you meant by oil threading, but if you were meaning oil cleansing, I’m including a link the the post I wrote about that method of facial cleansing. I hope this helps, and be sure to let me know if you have anymore questions! 🙂

    • I use this treatment 2-3 times per week, but that could vary from person to person. I’m often outside and in the mountains where the weather can be really harsh on your skin, so I find that 2-3 times per week is the right amount of exfoliation for me. You can find what’s right for you by trying it once a week, and if you find there’s still build up of dead skin on your face, try increasing it to 2x per week, and so on. It’s really nice to use this treatment in conjunction with oil cleansing which really helps to deep clean and leave your skin perfectly moisturized. I know a lot of people do oil cleansing 1-2x per day, but I’m a little lazy and only do it 3-4 x per week when I’m not doing this pineapple treatment. I hope this helps, and be sure to let me know if you have anymore questions, (I’ll leave a link below for the oil cleansing).

    • I’m so glad you’re enjoying the blog! I just updated the Pineapple Facial to include a link to the baking soda exfoliation post which includes all the information you’ll need. I love the use the baking soda exfoliation on occasion to rid my face of any build up of dead skin, but this pineapple facial is my favorite everyday facial treatment along with oil cleansing. I’ll send you the link for both posts so that you can decide what might be best for you skin. Let me know if you have anymore questions! 🙂

  1. Hi, A few questions for you to answer if you could please.

First does it have to always be a fresh pineapple? I’m not sure if the area where I’m at has fresh pineapples

Do you believe drinking pineapple juice would have any benefits to helping acne?

Is it helpful to combine the pineapple with other fruit/svegetables or other treatments

    Thank you very much!

    • It is really important that the pineapple be fresh because the enzymes are what does the work exfoliating your skin. When pineapple is canned, the cooking kills the live enzymes. I’m not sure if drinking pineapple juice would help acne, but fresh pineapple juice does help in digestion so it could help depending on the root cause of the breakouts, (that would be something to ask your healthcare practitioner). I’ve personally never tried mixing pineapple with other fruits and vegetables, so I really couldn’t say but I hope you get a chance to try this out because it’s my all time favorite facial treatment, and I use it at least 3-4 times per week. Let me know how it goes and if you have anymore questions!

  2. Heyya…. lovely site.. and awesm tip… could u tell me how much time sud we keep tis pineapple mask on face?.. i read its acid can burn ur face. Is it true?

    • I leave it on until it dries which is usually about 5 minutes, I’ve never had it burn my face before but maybe there are special cases where people may have had some sort of reaction to it. I’ve been using this for at least 8 years and so has my sister without any problems whatsoever. If I’ve been really good about keeping my face exfoliated, I sometimes wash off the pineapple mask after just a couple minutes. A good way to know it’s time to wash it off is when it starts to lightly itch. I hope this helps, and be sure to let me know if you have anymore questions!

  3. Hi!
I’m really glad I found your blog. Pineapple is my favorite and I actually thought wow, I bet this would make a great facial (my whole mouth tingles after eating pineapple), so I’m really glad you decided to do it and post about it. Also, I try not to wear makeup all the time and to use as many natural products as possible, so I love this. My question is this, after I did this for the first time last night I had really good results, I have pineapple left over, can I do this every day for the next few days? I feel like doing another facial today.

    • You can definitely do this several days in a row, especially if you haven’t exfoliated for awhile. I always know I’ve hit my limit if after a few seconds of the pineapple being on my face, it will start to itch, this tells me that the surface dead layer is gone and it’s time to rinse it off and do oil cleansing for a few days.:)

  4. hey there, thank you so much i am really glad for your tip.. i am actually sitting with the mask on my face. i have a question, i have hyperpigmentation and mild to moderate acne scars, does this mask help to reduce the scars? i have tried almost everything and i hate wearing makeup. could you please suggest me something for my acne scars? thank you so much.. you rock !!!!!

    • Scars are a tricky thing, but the enzymes in pineapple eat away the outer dead layer of skin and over time that does help to reduce scars. I also use the oil cleansing method to clean and moisturize my skin which I’ve noticed has really helped my skin overall. I don’t have many scars, but I have noticed that the better my diet has become (more real food/lots of fruits and veggies) the better my skin has become and my couple of scars have receded into almost nothing! I hope this helps, I don’t really know what you could do otherwise, but I do that healing comes from the inside out but that some scar tissue doesn’t go away.
