Homemade Pink Grapefruit Lip Balm | Get Inspired Everyday!

I love all things grapefruit, the taste… the smell… you name it! I ended up developing this lip balm out of necessity, you see I’ve gotten spoiled over the last few years with a local company that made the best grapefruit lip balm out of completely natural ingredients. However all of sudden I can’t find it anywhere, so I did what anyone with an addiction would do… I found a fix.

I used to make my own chapstick and lip balm because it’s one of the easiest DIY bath products you can make. It really is so much easier than something like lotion which involves combining water and oil. And another bonus is that you can make 6-8 of them in just 10 minutes, which means chapstick for months, or a great homemade gift for someone else.

I’ve been truly enjoying grapefruit for perhaps the first time in my life, and if you’re a fellow grapefruit fan you’ll love this Pink Grapefruit Green Smoothie and some of my Homemade Grapefruit Ginger Body Wash. I don’t know why it’s taken me so many years to discover the amazingness of grapefruit, but it’s really hit me hard this year!

I like to use a combination of oils in my chapsticks/lip balms because I feel like it does a better job conditioning. Coconut oil provides an immediate softening, the shea butter kicks in some long lasting protection with it’s waxier consistency, and the castor oil gives you superior softening and a beautiful gloss.

When you melt the oil and beeswax together, you want to make sure they’re completely melted without a single speck of wax.

I bought my containers at my local health food store, Natural Grocers, and they had several options to choose from.

The pink color in the chapstick came from a small amount of fresh beet juice that I added right at the end. I only used beet juice because that’s what I had around, but powdered beet root (available at health food stores and online) is easier to mix in. You can adjust the amount, tinting the lip balm to your desired shade. I prefer to keep it light pink because otherwise the color can be a little strong once you apply it.

This lip balm recipe can be used as blank slate and you can change the essential oils to whatever your favorite scent is. I’ve really been loving my new lip balm (it’s even better than the one I was buying) because my lips have been so chapped this winter no matter what I seem to do. But since I started using this lip balm, my lips have been perfectly soft!

    • A small amount of essential oil in the lip balm shouldn’t affect your lips. I’ve never had a problem with any lip balm making my lips dry because they’re ultra moisturizing. I’m really not sure what might be happening for you personally, but maybe try it without the essential oil, it might not agree with you, or make sure you’re drinking enough water everyday.

  1. Hi! Thanks for the recipe! Unfortunately, mine came out gritty, because of the beetroot powder. How can I avoid that as easily as possible?

    • Oh no, you must have a gritty beetroot powder. 🙁 I got mine from Natural Grocers in the supplement section, and it’s perfectly smooth powder without any grit to it. However if you do want to use what you already have, (or rescue the batch you’ve already made) you’ll need to strain it. I have a super fine mesh kitchen strainer that I use for things like this. You could also try straining it through cheesecloth, but it will stain it, and it would be impossible to get the wax out, so it would be more of a one time use. For the batch you’ve already made, try melting it and straining it, before pouring it back into your containers. I hope this helps, and be sure to let me know if you have anymore questions! 🙂

  2. Are there any non-citrus essential oils that both smell and taste good that can be used in lip balm? I’d prefer that it tastes sweet but I already have both grapefruit & lemon lip balm and I want to try something new.

    • I’m not sure which essential oils to use since I personally always gravitate to citrus, but I do know that vanilla essential oil smells amazing, although it does cost a small fortune.

    • Jojoba oil should work in place of castor oil, and it will still have the same scent. I would guess the consistency would be slightly softer as jojoba oil is thinner than castor oil. The main purpose of the castor oil is to add gloss to your lips and it’s also very conditioning as well, but jojoba should work just fine. I hope you enjoy the recipe, and be sure to let me know how it goes, or if you have anymore questions! 🙂

  3. HI Kari, I’m looking forward to making this recipe, sounds wonderful.. however, I’m wondering about the significance of using castor oil? I already have liquid vitamin E and wondering if it would be a good substitute? Thanks in advance for any advice and for the recipe

    • Castor oil add a nice glossiness to any lip balm, but Vitamin E oil is a pretty close substitute it’s just a bit less thick, plus it’s so good for the skin! I hope this helps and be sure to let me know if you have anymore questions. 🙂

    • I just pour the liquid lip balm right into the containers, but I wouldn’t recommend that unless you know your saucepan pours well as some of them just dribble down the sides. You can definitely use a funnel to make sure everything goes smoothly! I hope you’ll let me know how it goes, or if you have anymore questions. 🙂

    • You should be able to sub in cacao butter for the shea butter, but I’d leave out part of the beeswax because cacao butter is so much more solid at room temperature than shea butter. The recipe calls for 1 Tablespoon + 1 Teaspoon, and I’d start by omitting the 1 teaspoon and I’m guessing that should do the trick. I hope this helps, and be sure to let me know how it goes, or if you have anymore questions! 🙂

    • I’m not sure if lanolin cream would work as a substitute because I’ve never used it. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help, and I hope you enjoy the recipe! 🙂

  4. I love, love, love this! I have been enjoying my grapefruit this winter, as well, and would love to branch out from just dining on it. I’ve never made lip balm but you’ve given me the confidence to try. I can’t wait! PS) Love your photos!
