This is the quickest and easiest facial treatment I’ve ever tried with the most dramatic results. Normally, a full spa style facial takes a good 45 minutes between the scrub, mask, steam, toner, and finally moisturizing.

For that reason, I can’t remember the last time that I did a full facial, maybe last fall sometime. But if you do have a bit of time, you can try out this post about How to do a DIY At-Homemade Facial for gorgeous glowing skin.

Between full scale facials I have been relying on this pineapple facial and my baking soda treatment for exfoliation a couple times a week. By combining these two treatments I have been able to keep my skin clean and exfoliated without soap for several years now. In between exfoliation treatments, I use this Facial Oil Cleansing Method for day to day cleansing.

Ever since I have started using this pineapple treatment a couple of times per week, my skin has become smoother, more even toned, and my pores have visibly shrunk. This treatment even makes discernible progress on fine lines.

I was worried at first this treatment might irritate my skin because pineapple juice is acidic but it’s actually anti-inflammatory. However each person is different, so I would recommend, as with all treatments, to do a spot test if you have troublesome skin. My skin is really sensitive to any store bought products, and I’ve never had a problem with this pineapple mask, but this is a highly individual thing.

So why does this work?

The answer is bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapple that is similar in characteristics to the papain enzyme found in papaya. These enzymes break down protein, this means that the mask exfoliates the dead skin from the surface of your face without the use of abrasive ingredients, leaving your face fresh and glowing. This treatment hinges on the live enzymes so the pineapple has to be fresh, canned pineapple won’t work.

Interesting Note: There are recent studies emerging about the potential anti-inflammatory effects of pineapple and I have found this to be the case with my skin. It has proved to be a gentle all around treatment from cleansing to exfoliation.

What to do:

Take a small piece of pineapple, 1″ by 1″, and rub all over your face, taking care around the eye area. Wait 5-10 minutes until the mask dries. Next, jump in the shower to rinse, and for a quick mini face steam. When you get out of the shower, follow with your choice of moisturizer.

All in all this treatment requires no more than one minute to put on your face, making it the perfect easy solution to more time consuming treatments.

I hope you’ll enjoy this extra easy facial treatment as much as I do, and be sure and let me know in the comments what your favorite facial is!

  1. Hey there,

I don’t eat pineapple but would love to try this. Do you think I could buy a fresh pineapple and cut it into 1 inch squares and freeze the, then defrost a portion overnight in the fridge for the following morning?

    Lovely site btw 🙂

    • I’m pretty sure you could freeze some pineapple and it would still work the same. The key enzyme that makes this facial work is called bromelain, and I think you might lose a little in the freezing process, but hopefully there will be more than enough left in the pineapple for the facial! So glad you’re enjoying the site, and I hope this freezer method will work for you! 🙂

    • I’m not sure if pineapple is the cure you’re looking for, but it might help because it’s anti-inflammatory. I would suggest seeing a professional for further advice, they should be able to tell you more information about the cause of the spots.

  3. can I use a banana honey and oats face mask after doing this scrub, also how many times per week should I do exfoliation and masks? im trying to get on a regular and consistent regimen for my tired looking face.

    • I think you could use you mask in conjunction with the Pineapple Facial, but I’m not totally sure because I usually don’t combine more than one mask or treatment at a time. Your mask sounds soothing and moisturizing, so it should be okay. I use the Pineapple Facial 1-2 times per week, and I always moisturize after rinsing off this facial treatment.

  4. Awesome!!! I live in Providence, RI. No local pineapples here but I have some pineapple in my freezer. I’ll have to thaw a chunk. I love using baking soda to exfoliate. Interested to see how my skin likes it with this treatment. Has anyone with acne-prone skin tried it?

    • I’ve found that it really helps my breakouts. I thought it might inflame or make it worse, but it actually soothes my face and takes some of the redness out.

  5. This is great! I can’t wait to try & Tell my mom as she’s looking for a good facial exfoliator & toner. One question, though. You say the pineapple should be fresh not canned. Since they’re not small fruits & only a small piece is used, is it ok to cut the remainder & refrigerate it for future uses? How this isn’t a silly question & I really enjoy your blog!

    • I cut up a pineapple every 4-5 days and refrigerate it. I use most of it in my green smoothies and a couple of pieces for this pineapple facial. You can also freeze the remainder for smoothies, but it’s best to use it fresh!

  6. I did this two nights ago followed by the baking soda scrub. So nice. I’m looking forward to seeing some of the same results you have; mainly reduced pore size 😉 I am curious, though, do you do this on a clean face? Like wash off all the oils and make-up, then do the pineapple mask? I didn’t know if this would be the step after an oil cleansing.

    • I usually just splash my face about 10 times with cold water. I then pat my face dry and apply the pineapple mask. I don’t wear makeup, but I know that some people use the oil cleansing to remove makeup and cleanse before moving on to any other treatment. Hope this helps!

      • One more thing that I thought of is sometimes I do all three treatments. First pineapple then baking soda and finally the oil cleansing. I find that it is extra cleansing and moisturizing after my skin has been exfoliated! You can rearrange the different treatments to suit your individual needs. When I don’t have much time I go for whichever one I need the most.

  7. It’s a great pick up for your face on mornings that your face is feeling lifeless and puffy. For me it’s a mini makeover that tightens pores and gives you a glow. I like to follow up with Humphrey’s Witch Hazel then Coconut oil. Then I can leave the house not feeling like I should wear a bag over my head!

    • I just tried coconut oil as a moisturizer on my face this morning. I was worried it would be too greasy, so I just used a smidgen. I have to say that I really like the way my skin feels and will continue to use it as I am weaning commercial EVERYTHING out of my home.
