This classic Strawberry Banana Smoothie recipe never gets old with its sweet berry flavor. This one gets a slight upgrade with a touch of vanilla to bring out the flavors and make it even tastier. There are lots of options to change things up with this recipe using any kind of yogurt and milk you like. You can also make this with fresh or frozen fruit, so it’s the perfect all-season smoothie.
I love finding new flavor combos, but I never get tired of the classics either. I’m pretty sure a strawberry banana smoothie was the first smoothie I ever made when my mom first got her Vitamix. We had never had a blender before in our house, and it was a blast getting started with all the fun things you can make in one.
Growing up, we always had lots of strawberries from the garden in the freezer. So strawberry banana smoothies were a ‘thing’ in our house during the winter months.
They really are the perfect smoothie for year-round fresh berry flavor. You can use either fresh or frozen fruit in this recipe and customize it to whatever you have on hand.

Ingredients & Substitutions
- Strawberries – can be added either fresh or frozen depending on what you have. It’s better to use frozen strawberries than unripe out-of-season fresh berries. With smoothies, you need something to be frozen so if you use fresh berries, try using frozen bananas.
- Bananas – are the same as I mentioned with strawberries, use either fresh or frozen. You just want to make sure something in your smoothie is frozen for the best texture. Banana adds plenty of sweetness, but you can add a touch of honey or maple syrup to taste as a sweetener if desired.
- Yogurt – We love Greek yogurt here, but any dairy-free yogurt you like can be subbed in. You can also just use a bit more milk of your choice as well. I like to use canned coconut milk for dairy-free because it adds so much creaminess and flavor.
- Milk – I’ve been loving the Malk brand lately for dairy-free milk because they don’t use any additives. I like getting any of the unsweetened vanilla nut milk for the extra vanilla flavor. But you can use any milk you’d like here! Another dairy-free version we like is to use orange juice for a different flavor.
- Vanilla and almond extract – just a touch of both extracts makes this smoothie irresistible. But if you don’t like almond extract, you can leave it out. I add just the smallest amount so it enhances the berry flavor without tasting like almond extract.
Make this recipe step by step
Step 1: Start by measuring/prepping all of your ingredients.
Step 2: Add the ingredients to the blender with the frozen items on top for easier blending.
Don’t skip the vanilla extract it really adds a lot of depth to this smoothie!
Step 3: Blend until smooth and enjoy right away.

Tips & Tricks
- If your banana and strawberries are frozen you may need to add a bit more liquid to get the smoothie blending well and not be too thick.
- Greek yogurt is our favorite for the creamiest smoothie, but for a dairy-free, I love coconut yogurt. Another dairy-free option is to use orange juice for a bright note of flavor.
- You don’t need to add ice to this smoothie because you’ll be using frozen strawberries. Ice just waters down a smoothie, so it’s best to use frozen fruit in place of ice cubes.

Very good.. like the almond flavor to the smoothie
So glad you enjoyed it!
It tasted amazing it was super easy to make I did not have the almond extract I hope that didn’t kill the recipe I liked it anyway
So glad to hear you enjoyed it and the almond extract isn’t essential by any means it just adds depth of flavor!
This is so good! I added a scoop of protein powder and I used coconut milk because I had it.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it and coconut milk is really tasty with strawberry and banana!
can u make this in a juicer
This recipe doesn’t work for a juicer because bananas can’t be juiced, but I’m including a couple of links to my juicing recipes instead.

Hi i wanna try this recipe but im really unsure of what you mean by cup what kind of cup size are we talking about? And when you say 12 ounces what do you mean? Because when i change it to 2x the ounces doesnt change
I measured out the strawberries in a regular kitchen measuring cup, (a measuring cup is 8 fluid ounces). Frozen strawberries come in 12 ounce packages here, which is 340 grams if that helps? I hope this answers your questions, but if not just let me know, I’d be happy to help!
That’s quite a lot of strawberries isnt it? 3 cups of 8 fluid ounces.
I have not tried any of these yet, I am curious though. Can these be used for a breakfast replacement?
You’ll want to think about protein in some form if you’re looking to make this Strawberry Banana Smoothie breakfast. If you use a good quality Greek yogurt that will have some protein, or you might try a protein powder you like. If you make this with the dairy free options, you might find it to be too much fruit sugar without any protein to balance you out in the morning. Everyone is different but I hope you’ll let me know what you end up trying with it!
